The Dorayaki Project aims to enhance and value craftsmanship and craftspeople in Japan, France and worldwide. It takes inspiration from Japanese mindset, aesthetics and excellence, combined with French know-how and art de vivre.
What is the role of craftspeople in Japanese society today ? Understand it for today, design it for tomorrow!
Project ambition: to create a new society modelling based on craftsmanship.
(done 🙏) I. Discover: Field Research (March 2018 – August 2019)
Field research in Japan and France. Total immersion. Interviewing, observing, taking pictures of craftspeople. Includes 3 months in artist residency in MORIUMIUS eco-lodge in Tohoku area, nearby Sendai (http://moriumius.jp/en/)
(done 🙏) II. Co-create: Collaboration with Craftspeople (December 2018 – February 2019)
Thanks to the research findings, initiating a partnership with at least one craftsperson, co-designing and testing a product that will help both the final user and the craftsperson. The objective is to re-affirm the unique role of craftspeople in today’s and tomorrow’s society.
(done 🙏) III. Share: Exhibition (October 2019)
Gathering and analysing the information from the field research (interviews plus pictures of craftspeople) and presenting the results into an exhibition held in Rennes (France) from Oct 22nd to Nov 02nd, 2019. A conference will be held on Saturday, Oct 26th.
followed-up by… a publication? // co-design sessions? // an educational program? or all of the above…!
Ideally celebrate the discovery of people, materials, cultures, and celebrate the story of craftsmanship in motion, between tradition and innovation.
